Jacques Schwarz-Bart’s new project, Jazz Racine Haiti, is an intriguing dialogue that explores the shared roots of jazz, voodoo music, and Racine – “roots music from the countryside of Haiti.” Schwarz-Bart grew up in Guadeloupe, went to school in France and worked for the French Senate, has visited Haiti numerous times, and studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. After school, he played alongside jazz giants like Danilo Perez, Chucho Valdes, and Roy Hargrove, whose group Schwarz-Bart left in 2005 in order to lead his own bands. His diverse background gives a hint of his musical vision, featuring both voodoo priests and A-list jazz musicians, in an interesting expansion of traditional approaches to jazz. The music is genuinely accessible for audiences new to any of the styles involved, yet it also offers an opportunity for music aficionados in search of something that is relatable, grounded in tradition, and yet fresh and unpredictable.
